Hike the Great Wall is totally a better way to see one of the 7 wonders of the world. Compare with the popular tours, doing a hike makes your trip much more interesting, some parts of the wall are off the beaten track. The problem is it is much tough than a normal tour since you need to walk on the wild section and the road is tougher.
One of the most popular Great Wall hiking routes is from Jiankou to Mutianyu which you can see the wild Jiankou and the rebuilt Mutianyu Great Wall in 1 day. Work as a tour guide over 10 years, I have guided this hiking tour so many times and felt not tough and not dangerous at all until 24th December 2018…
My client was a professional swimmer in the US national team. He is super fit and strongly requested to hike the wild wall which is most dangerous– wild Jiankou. As I have hike a few times by myself before, I know he can do it, so I schedule this tough hike for him. It was a super tough hike, you need to be very careful on some point. But the view is totally worth this hike. We saw no one else on the wall during this 4 hours hike. It is absolutely an off-the-beaten-track of Beijing.
There are some places quite difficult to hike.
In all, this hike is ok for some people who are really fit and have hike experience before. If you don’t want to make it dangerous, hike Jiankou to Mutianyu is a good choice. You can see both sections as well, but not hike this dangerous part.
