  • Jun 1, 2016: "Interesting walking tour off the beaten track"

I joined the free Beijing walking tour and got to see parts of the Beijing Hutongs I certainly wouldn't have seen on my own. Our lovely guide had many interesting stories to tell. The tour is perfectly composed, including arriving at one of the lakes exactly at sunset - makes for great pictures! I cannot recommend highly enough.

May 16, 2016: "Free Beijing walking tour"

I had a good time joining the Hutong tour. Joe is really wonderful in teaching us about the Chinese culture. He even went an extra mile getting me back to my hotel so I can experience riding the subway. Thank you very much for making my trip memorable and so much fun.

May 08, 2016: "The Free Walking tour of some of the hutong districts is a must"

This was a terrific walking tour, concentrated over a small area including some hutong (ancient neighborhoods) in Beijing. You meet a family in one of the houses. The person we met was a real character who trains crickets to fight and has a menagerie of pets. We went down Tobacco Road and passed the Bell Tower and Drum Tower; passed through the trendy, but beautiful back lake area with its bars and shops and then ended at the top of Jingshan Park for a birds eye view of the "haunted" Forbidden City. I highly recommend this walk for its history and orientation of Beijing. Well worth your time. The tour meets at the head of a very busy ancient shopping street. Get there early so you can spend some time wandering that area because you won't investigate it on the tour.

May 01, 2016: "Excellent Walking Tour - Highly Recommended"

Leo was a fantastic guide. His perfectly planned route took us to areas of Beijing we wouldn't have necessarily visited if using a traditional guide book. Having access to the hutong and experiencing how locals live was insightful and entertaining. His knowledgable stories teamed with his jovial, humorous character kept the tour captivated and amused throughout. I recommend that this is the first thing you do in Beijing. Tip generously, he deserves it.

January 14, 2016: "Great way to spend an evening!"

It's easy enough to wander the hutongs on your own. However, going with someone local definitely helps bring the history alive reveals innumerable little insights on hutong living. I did a 3-hour evening walk with Leo visiting the hutongs around Nanluguxiang shopping street, scenic Houhai Lake and more. A highlight was visiting the home of an older gentlemen who used to train fighting crickets! The group was diverse and engaging and Leo had an obvious enthusiasm for showing visitors around Beijing. I'd definitely recommend the walking tour. I unfortunately met Leo towards the end of my Beijing stay, but would certainly book him for one of his other tours the next time I'm in town!

January 13, 2016: "Amazing walk through Beijing Hutongs"

This activity was one of the greatest I did in Beijing!
First of all Leo is an incredible guide! He loves his job and the history of China. He tells you lot of histories and bring you to places you are not able to reach by your own (unless you know the city very well).
After several times in Beijing I tried to explore the famous Hutongs without success, but with Leo, we saw and understood the Hutongs´history, structure, houses, life, etc... I went with my mother, who speaks little English, but Leo spoke that clear than she get almost everything!
The tour is 100% for free, but I gave him a tip as he much worth it after 3 hours of tour.

May 22, 2016: "Excelente Tour y Excelente Guía"

April 12, 2016: "Una gran experiencia"

  • How can I join the tour?
You can contact Beijing walking Tours by using the contact options ( Mobil: +86-13581665548 ) or, if you prefer, use the inquiry form Contact Us. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Is the tour really free?
Absolutely FREE, and there is no hidden cost in the tour, so it is customary to give tips to the guides as a small token, however, this is not mandatory in any way.

How much should I tip the guide?
Living in Beijing is getting more expensive like a lot of western countries. So we suggest 5 USD to 10 USD per person tip to your great guide.

Do I need to make a reservation?
It is highly advisable. We limit our groups to make your tour a more pleasurable experience, so you should try to make a reservation as early as possible. However, if there is space on a tour we will always try to accommodate everyone.

How long does the walking tour take?
The whole tour takes 2.5 hours.

Do I need to bring anything?
We suggest you wear comfortable walking shoes and perhaps bring a bottle of water.

    Where does the tour finish?
Our tour finishes at Shichahai which also called houhai. You can find a lot of restaurant and bars.

When should I take the tour?
We highly recommend you take the tour during your first evening in Beijing. It will prove to be an invaluable guide to making the best of your stay.

    What time should I arrival?
Ideally we like everyone to arrive 10 minutes before a tour starts. We endeavour to get underway on time, so we appreciate it if you can try to keep to the allotted tour time. If you are running late please call us to let us know and we will do our best to hold up the tour for a reasonable period of time.

Do you stop for a break?
We have a few times break in the tour. Our guide is happy to answer all your questions or give some travel tips to you.

Do you have to be fit to take the walking tours?
Seriously, our tours are an opportunity to explore and discover Beijing, not a race around it. We also make frequent stops, so that you can enjoy that Kodak moment and listen to tales of Beijing past and present.
Anybody can enjoy our tours, no matter their fitness level.
